Tera Ferna Plays Hot New Album With A New Lineup

Tera Ferna is riding a high of success and exhilarating exhaustion, we are sure. Mid last year they released a music video for their newest single, “Sundown Shadows,” directed by Freddie Munoz of Alpha Red Productions and shot by Philip Roy. At the Day After Christmas Fest at the Korova they debuted a new line up where former pianist, Richie Castillo, was noticeably absent. Moving forward last month lead singer Matt Charles, guitarist James “Jolly” Perez, drummer Anthony Washington, and bassist Brandon Kent released their full length album, “Sundown Shadows,” to a rousing reception at Jack’s Patio. The album, though haunting, seduces the listener with true melodies and messages of life, be them painful or joyous. Since that show they’ve traveled the country on a national tour that’s led them through great sound hubs including New Mexico and California. Tera Ferna has since returned to San Antonio, their hometown, and have wasted no time filling up an already ambitious schedule with fantastic shows! I ran into lead singer, Matt Charles, and asked him his thoughts on their fresh sound and the future of the now quartet.

What mood, message were you looking to project in this latest album?

The overall mood of this album is brooding yet honest in a way that provokes the listener to connect with each song at the very core of the basic human emotion. The message that is sent throughout this entire album is, that there is Beauty in pain, Love in the struggle and Hope in the realness. Whether you believe you have a soul or not becomes irrelevant in the simple fact that as different as we all are, in the end we all experience life in a way that is unique to every individual and that is actually what connects all of us together.

Would you care to make any comments on Richie and the future of the band?

We would like to personally thank Richie for the musical contributions that he put forth on this record. We wish him the best of luck in anything that he does. I must say though, upon experiencing tour life, our current lineup with the remaining four members of Tera Ferna feels right. We are continually writing and creating new music. We already have new material that will continue to propel us into the next phase of our careers. We are extremely motivated to share our music with the world. The future of the band is ready and open for whatever comes as we continue to set and accomplish the goals we put forth.

And I know the two questions you are all asking: “Where can we listen to Tera Ferna RIGHT NOW?”, and, “When can we see them live??” Lucky for you their full length album, “Sundown Shadows,” is available for download now on iTunes and to stream Spotify! And your luck continues because they are performing Tonight, February 20th, at The Movement Gallery/Underground Library (1412 E Commerce St. 78205) for the “Unestablished” Event: an evening dedicated to bringing together great hidden talent that is thriving here in San Antonio. The event is from 6PM-11Pm! Below check out some photos I took of Tera Ferna at their album release show, and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @TeraFerna for all upcoming news!
